Xaysomboun Province was established on 13 December 2013 as the 18th Province of Laos. It is located in the central part of Laos, bordering Xiengkhouang Province to the north and the east, Bolikhamxay Province to the south and Vientiane Province to the west. The Province consists of 5 districts, which include Anouvong, Long Cheng, Long San, Hom and Tha Thom District. The total population is around 80,000, with the majority of its people being of Hmong ethnicity. This province does not share any borders with neighboring countries.

Brief History

Xaysomboun is the 18th and latest province established in Laos in 2013. It was a special administrative zone before becoming a province.

The province is filled with mountains, which can be seen from Laos’ highest peak at Phou Bia, and thick jungles. This provided lots of strategic locations and hideouts during the uprising in the mid-1900s.

Overall Weather

Xaysomboun has three seasons:

- Cool-dry (November to February): During this period, the average temperature hovers around 20C. The temperature may drop as low as 11C during this period. The temperature may soar as high as 27C as it approaches the hot-dry season. Please take note that the temperature drops rapidly especially after sunset, one should bring warm clothing to guard against the cold. However, it is the best period to visit the place due to its cool and comfortable temperature.

- Hot-dry (March to April): During this time, the average temperature hovers around 27C. The temperature may drop as low as 15C especially in the beginning of the hot-dry season. The temperature may also soar as high as 33C as it approaches the end of the season. It is advisable to stay hydrated during this period to stay healthy.

- Rainy season (May to October): During this season, the average temperature hovers around 25C. The temperature may soar as high as 33C especially at the beginning of the rainy-season and drop as low as 16C as it approaches the cool-dry season. Rain is expected to be the heaviest in July and August. Do bring along an umbrella or raincoat to shield against the rain. Do be extra careful during the trekking of Nam Ha National Protected Area as it could be muddy and slippery due to the rain.

Travelling to Xaysomboun

There are currently no public transportations or flight directly to Xaysomboun. However, the best way to reach Xaysomboun is by riding a motorbike or a car that can be hired in Vientiane. One can also arrange and negotiate a personalized adventure to the province with tour operators in Vang Vieng or Vientiane.
