Phou Khao Khouay National Park is one of Laos' most important protected natural areas and extends across Xaysomboun Province, Vientiane Province, Vientiane Capital, and Bolikhamxay Province. Originally established as a National Biodiversity Conservation Area (NBCA) in 1993 and later upgraded to National Park status in 2021, it covers approximately 1,920–2,000 square kilometers of mountains, forests, waterfalls, rivers, and wildlife habitats.

The name "Phou Khao Khouay" translates to "Buffalo Horn Mountain," referring to the distinctive mountain formations found throughout the park.
