Chao Anouvong Caves is located in Phouhuaxang Village, about 4km north of Anouvong town. This area is surrounded by a number of mountains, and the Nam Jang River flows through the caves. Of note, there are two caves of close proximity to each other: one is 7m high, 4m wide and 30m long while the other is 3.5m high, 5m wide and 300m long. The second cave has an interesting history, as it has been said that King Anouvong stayed there in order to hide from Siamese army. In spite of only having a small force, King Anouvong successfully escaped and set up his stronghold at the river bank of Nam Jang.
