Nam Kading National Protected Area (NPA), formerly known as the Nam Kading National Biodiversity Conservation Area, is one of the largest and most ecologically important protected landscapes in central Laos. Located in Bolikhamxay Province, approximately 40 km east of Paksan, the protected area covers around 1,690 square kilometers of rugged mountains, evergreen forests, river valleys, and remote wilderness. Established in 1993, Nam Kading plays a vital role in preserving the biodiversity of the Mekong region and is considered one of Laos' most significant conservation areas.

The protected area is named after the Nam Kading River, a major tributary of the Mekong River that flows through the heart of the reserve. The landscape is characterized by dramatic mountain ranges, dense forests, waterfalls, and pristine rivers. Elevations range from approximately 140 meters to over 1,500 meters at Phou Pa Paek, creating a variety of habitats that support an exceptional diversity of wildlife and plant species.

Nam Kading is internationally recognized for its rich biodiversity. Surveys have documented at least 43 mammal species and more than 230 bird species within the protected area. Rare and endangered wildlife found here includes the Asian elephant, gaur, sun bear, clouded leopard, tiger, giant muntjac, northern and southern white-cheeked gibbons, and red-shanked douc langurs. The area is also one of the few places in Laos where the rare pale-capped pigeon has been recorded.

Birdwatchers are particularly attracted to Nam Kading due to its impressive avian diversity. Notable species include the great hornbill, wreathed hornbill, green peafowl, Vietnamese crested argus, and numerous forest birds that thrive within the protected ecosystem.
