Held annually during the full moon in February, the Sikhottabong festival is celebrated over several days at the Sikhottabong Stupa. Arguably the most important stupa in South Central Laos, the Sikhottabong Stupa has endured as a cultural monument that is highly valued - it was first built thousands of years ago by King Nanthasense, renovated 500 years ago by King Setthathirat, and more recently restored during the 1950s.
People from all over Laos - and even from North Eastern Thailand - make a pilgrimage to Khammouane. Besides the religious activities, there are also local performances held around the stupa, which is open to public. There is also a trade fair, so you can take the opportunity to buy local products and support the community.
