Thakhek (meaning “Welcome Guests”), the capital city of Khammouane Province, is located in the mid-south of Laos some 370km down the Mekong River from Vientiane. It is conveniently positioned halfway on the road to Champasak Province and the Cambodian border. This makes it an ideal place, with its natural and historical attractions, to break the long journey. Route 12 connects across the majestic Annamite Mountain Range, site of the infamous Ho Chi Minh Trail, to Central Vietnam.
It used to be a major administrative and trading outpost under French occupation for which reason it is rich in splendid, though dilapidated, colonial buildings. Huge old trees give shade to broad avenues; the pace of life is languid and tropical.
