Luang Prabang, Lao ຫລວງພະບາງ

Languid and Lovely

While LuangPrabang is considered the tourism hub of Laos, it never feels like a bustling tourist trap found around the region. The languid pace, friendly faces and picturesque landscapes will more than make up for almost any weather conditions that may come your way.

Luang Prabang was once the royal capital until Vientiane became the administrative capital in 1946. Today, it remains as the most visited city in Laos. 90 percent of the people in the country work in agricul- ture, with rice accounting for 80 percent of agricultural production in Laos. This is an unspoiled destination that has yet to be discovered en masse – its religion, culture and tradition still tenacious. A natural beauty, Luang Prabang is surrounded by mountains and is 700 metres above sea level at the confluence of the Nam Khan and Mekong Rivers.

The city’s old-world charm is made up of over 2,000 saffron-clad monks living in 33 gilded Buddhist temples and monastries, breath- taking scenery, sustainable community outreach programmes, rich culture and Gallic villas revived as boutique hotels.

Brief History

Luang Prabang had been the first capital of Lan Xang since the early establishment of the kingdom. Its earlier name was Mueang Sua which was awarded to Khun Lo by his father Khun Borom. Khun Lo established a dynasty and renamed the city Mueang Xieng Thong.

Time passed to the Fa Ngum's era (born 1316-died 1393). Fa Ngum and his father, Chao Fa Ngiao, were banished to the Khmer kingdom of Angkor by his own grandfather Souvanna Khampong. Having been married to a Khmer princess and with the support of the king of Angkor, Fa Ngum returned with an army to gain control of his kingdom. During his reign in 1353-1374, Fa Ngum found his kingdom in the name of Lan Xang which means "land of millions elephants and a white parasol. " He brought the Prabang Buddha image from Angkor to be enshrined in Viang Chan Vieng Kam (now Vientiane). The Prabang has become the Laotian's spiritual protector since.

Fa Ngum named Xieng Thong the capital city as Cri Satna Khanahut Uttamra and in fulfilling his wife's wish made Theravada Buddhism the state religion by legitimatizing this quest with the Prabang Buddha image. The name Luang Prabang was derived from this Prabang Buddha image which used to be enshrined in Xieng Thong.

Overall Weather

Luang Prabang has three seasons:

- Hot-dry (approximately March to May). During this time of the year, the climate changes slowly into a hotter spell between 24-39 degrees. Tourist are advised to spend time visiting the waterfalls in the afternoon to get some relief from the heat or relax at a cafe. This is also the season where farmers begin to slash and burn their crops leading to hazy air which might be uncomfortable for some.

- Rainy season (June to September). Depending on your luck, you might encounter some downpour throughout parts of the day. The rain brings relief to the heat of hot-dry season. The heaviest downfalls are during August where we would advise tourist to avoid travelling by road across states due to bad conditions.

- Cool-dry (October to February). The best season to visit Luang Prabang coincides with the cool-dry season. Average temperature hovering around 10-30 degrees, pleasantly cool in the day time and chilly in the night. Be sure to bring a jacket especially in December and Janary when temperature can drop rapidly and catch visitors off-guard.
