The Elephant Conservation Center (ECC) in Sayaboury Province is Laos’ leading elephant conservation facility and one of the most respected ethical elephant sanctuaries in Southeast Asia. Located on the shores of Nam Tien Lake, surrounded by protected forest and rolling hills, the center is dedicated to the conservation, welfare, breeding, veterinary care, and rewilding of the endangered Asian elephant. Established in 2011, the ECC was created to address the declining elephant population in Laos and to provide rescued elephants with a safe and natural environment.

Unlike traditional elephant camps, the Elephant Conservation Center focuses on observation-based experiences rather than elephant riding or performance activities. Visitors can observe elephants roaming freely through hundreds of hectares of protected forest, learn about elephant behavior from conservation experts, visit Laos’ only elephant hospital, and discover the center’s breeding and rewilding programs. The sanctuary provides a humane and educational experience where animal welfare is the highest priority.

The center is home to dozens of elephants rescued from the logging industry, tourism operations, and illegal trafficking situations. Many elephants now live in semi-wild conditions within the protected landscape surrounding Nam Tien Reservoir. Conservation efforts include veterinary treatment, mahout training, scientific research, habitat protection, and programs designed to increase the long-term survival of Asian elephants in Laos.

Visitors can participate in day trips or multi-day experiences that include guided forest walks, observation of elephant social behavior, educational presentations, visits to the nursery and elephant hospital, and opportunities to learn about the challenges facing elephant conservation throughout Southeast Asia. The center emphasizes minimal human interaction and promotes responsible wildlife tourism.

The surrounding Nam Pouy Protected Area and Nam Tien Lake add to the experience, offering spectacular scenery, wildlife viewing opportunities, and a tranquil natural setting. The combination of conservation, education, and eco-tourism makes the Elephant Conservation Center one of the most meaningful attractions in Laos for nature lovers, families, photographers, and wildlife enthusiasts.
