Xieng Liap Cave, also known as Tham Xieng Liap or Xieng Liab Cave, is one of the most accessible and enjoyable cave attractions along the famous Thakhek Loop in Khammouane Province, central Laos. Located approximately 14 kilometers east of Thakhek along Route 12, this impressive limestone river cave is a popular stop for travelers exploring the region's spectacular karst landscapes.

The cave is famous for its massive entrance, towering limestone walls, and underground river that flows through the cavern. Unlike some of the larger caves in Laos, Xieng Liap Cave offers a relaxed and easy adventure suitable for most visitors. The cave stretches approximately 200 meters through a dramatic limestone cliff and can be explored either on foot during the dry season or by boat during the rainy season when water levels are higher.

One of the highlights of Xieng Liap Cave is the opportunity to swim inside the cave's cool, clear waters. During hot days, visitors often stop to enjoy a refreshing swim beneath the high cave ceiling while admiring the natural limestone formations above. The cave's spacious chambers and natural light filtering through both entrances create a unique and photogenic atmosphere.

In the dry season, visitors can walk or wade through the cave and emerge into a picturesque valley on the opposite side. The surrounding landscape features dramatic 300-meter-high limestone cliffs, lush vegetation, and peaceful countryside scenery. During the wet season, local boat operators provide transportation through the cave, adding an extra sense of adventure to the experience.

The cave is also known for its wildlife and natural environment. Soft-shelled turtles have been reported in the cave waters, while the surrounding limestone cliffs provide habitat for unique species native to the Khammouane karst ecosystem.

Because of its proximity to Thakhek and easy accessibility, Xieng Liap Cave is often the first cave visited by travelers beginning the Thakhek Loop. Many visitors combine their stop with nearby attractions such as Tha Falang, Kong Leng Lake, Buddha Cave (Tham Pa Fa), and Konglor Cave.

Today, Xieng Liap Cave remains one of the hidden gems of the Thakhek Loop, offering a perfect combination of cave exploration, swimming, photography, and scenic natural beauty.
